2025 Hakan Orbay Research Award

Applications have started for the Hakan Orbay Research Awards, which encourage innovative theoretical and applied research in fields of finance and financial economics, in order to keep alive the name of Sabancı Business School Member Hakan Orbay, who passed away in 2011. 

In the evaluation process of the awards given in two categories, namely "Young Researcher" and "Doctorate Student", priority will be given to supporting theoretical and/or applied studies in the fields of firm theory, contract and incentive theories, company finance, corporate governance, and research aimed at understanding emerging markets. 

In the award program, where applications covering both theoretical and applied research in the fields of finance and financial economics are accepted, the aim is to encourage applications related to finance in areas such as firm theory, incentive and contract theory, and corporate management, on which Hakan Orbay worked intensively. 

The award amount will be 1500 Dollars in the Young Researcher category and 750 Dollars in the Doctorate Student category. 

Applications are open untilJuly 25, 2025.

Short Bio of Hakan Orbay:

After graduating from Ankara Science High School in 1979, Hakan Orbay received his undergraduate degrees in Electrical Engineering and Physics from Bogazici University in 1983. He obtained his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Calgary University and subsequently returned to Turkey to work in the Information Technology area of the banking sector between 1988-1991. He kept close links with academia during those years and eventually went to the U.S. for his doctoral studies in 1991. After obtaining a PhD in Economics from Stanford University, Graduate School of Business, he worked as a faculty member at Koc University until 1999. Next, he joined the Sabancı Business School during its establishment years and worked there as a faculty member until his untimely death in 2011. Hakan Orbay produced original research in microeconomics and finance and made important contributions to the establishment and development of the Sabancı Business School, Istanbul, Turkey.
